Be careful revisiting relationships, places, or things because they feel safe, when all they really are, is familiar. Be careful of defaulting back to the familiar because you are fearful or anxious about going out and finding something new. Especially after you have gone through something hard. Made mistakes. Had your heart broken or left something unhealthy. You seek out the known comfortable thing and try to rationalize to yourself that it is good. You use as evidence all the memories of good emotions and pleasant times you had. You zero in on those and push out all the other objective truths that are tied to those same memories. You become blind to those facts simply to feel desired, accomplished, safe, or comfortable. Don’t be fooled by the ease of those situations. Just because it is easy doesn’t mean it leads to positive outcomes. You can cherish the past, the memories, and the feelings of those moments and also know it isn’t right for you any longer. These two things can be true at the same time.
The familiarity of those situations offer a known thing. A thing void of surprises or challenges. It is something that is comfortable and predictable. You see this comfort as a much better alternative to an unknown future. You can become complacent and convince yourself that settling for something that is known is better than getting hurt, failing, or falling again. It is those decisions of settling and returning to a known thing that regret and resentment are built on. Coming to realizations, often what seems like too late, that you allowed yourself to be tricked by fear into not venturing out into the unknown.
That unknown is often where amazing discoveries lay. You have to identify what you want, what you deserve, and move in that direction. Even when it is frightening. You have to to take the risk. You have to tell yourself that you are prepared for the chaos, prepared for the failures, prepared for the confusion and the struggle that lines the path to finding what you are destined for. How do you resist the drive to stay safe and comfortable? How do you stop running back to the familiar? You have to recognize what you are doing and how it doesn’t lead you to what we want. It instead holds you mercilessly in the same place you have always been. Hopes and dreams have never been realized in the familiar. They have been built on venturing off into the unknown and navigating it with excitement and courage.
